Description:
Better with Books is a short animation that shows the power of escapism that books provide to children in oncology wards.

Using magical characters we transport people from clinical and scary hospital wards, to a world that is only a book away. The scenes were designed to encapsulate a child's true imagination.

Using over-sized familiar objects & animals, mixed with fantastical imaginary creatures to create a world in which a child with cancer can let their minds run free.

Studies have shown that storytelling increases oxytocin and positive emotions as well as decreasing cortisol and pain in hospitalized children; it also allows them to connect with normal home routines further giving them comfort in unfamiliar surroundings.

Emmie’s Books provides books to children in hospital. We needed to raise funds as well as donations to help as many children as possible with escaping pain. Better with books aims to show the public the power of escapism, using animation to transport children with cancer from clinical hospital settings, to a wonderous world of imagination.

Rates of cancer in young children has risen by 24% in the past decade.

Studies show that storytelling increases positive emotions and decreases pain in hospitalized children.

Costs for parents of a child with cancer is staggering, mixed with a drop in living standards, it leaves parents with little income to spend on books.
